The Soul Food Educational Cafe series during Black History Month was incredibly enriching for the students involved. The range of activities, from educational experiences like the Black Card Revoked game with the University of Richmond’s R.E.A.C.H. program; viewing the “Dawoud Bey: Elegy” exhibit at VMFA, touring the Richmond Hill Dwelling, visiting the Black History Museum’s “Visions of Progress”, viewing of the Till movie, a “What is Your Blackness” reflection, along with the Generation Dream Edu-Concert with Dr. Bhagat/Young Kings at MLK Middle School were awesome!
Additionally, the Boys/Girls Mini Overnight Retreat and the Teen Summit where students participated in leadership development and engaged in various topics that ranged from gun violence, substance abuse, and mental health mixed with arts and entertainment made a positive impact creating memorable experiences.
Highlighting black-owned restaurants throughout the events not only supported local businesses but also added to the cultural experience for participants, enriching their understanding of entrepreneurship and culinary traditions. Special thanks go out to Inner City BBQ, Jamaica House, Soul-n-Vingear, and ICreate catering.
Looking forward to spring and preparing for the Spring Retreat next month.
