Rituals of Remembrance: Commemorating Juneteenth 2024
Each year the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) selects a theme to that’s explores the black experience. The national theme for 2024 is African Americans and the Arts. At Richmond Hill we are commemorating Juneteenth throughout the month with a variety of rituals of remembrance as we lift up African American history and culture.
Black America Is – Tuesday, June 18, 2024 @ 6:30pm
Join us at Richmond Hill for a documentary screening of Black America Is…. Loria King and Avril Speak conducted several interviews with people about their lived experiences. After the screening they will take questions from the audience. RSVP below. Learn more about the film here.
The Judy Project Collection – Friday, June 21, 2024 @ 10:30am
Join us at the Library of Virginia to learn about the Judy Project Collection from archivist Trenton Hizer. When Pam Smith began the research in 2019, it was with the intention of making the research accessible to the public. Seating is limited to 20 people and is nearly full! Reserve your spot below.
Art Gallery Opening – Saturday, June 22, 2024 @ 11:00am
Our guests will be Paula Saylor-Robinson, Director of Audience Development and Community Engagement at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; Hamilton Glass, mural artist and founder of Mending Walls and All in Together; and Unicia Buster, a quilter and fiber artist whose art will be displayed at Richmond Hill until July 12. Prayers of Remembrance – Tuesday, June 25, 2024 @ 10:30am
Co-pastoral Director Katie Heishman will offer a prayer at the sculpture of the Black Madonna and Child, followed by Jabriel Hasan who will offer a prayer in the Dwelling of enslaved Africans in remembrance of those who lived there and worked at this site now called Richmond Hill.
KOINONIA School Reflections – Tuesday, June 25, 2024 @ 5:30pm
The evening prayer service will include reflections from two members of KOINONIA: School of Race and Social Justice.
